Methods engineer — industrialisation and 4 and 5-axis CAM programming
You industrialise aluminium aerospace parts, from the customer definition to a frozen, repeatable process: routing, raw material blank, fixture, simulated 4 and 5-axis CAM program, first part and FAI file.
What you will do
- Review the customer definition (3D model, drawing, tolerances, key characteristics) and feed back manufacturability issues before launch.
- Define the routing: sequence of operations, machine allocation, datum strategy and machining allowances.
- Define the raw material blank (dimensions, grain direction, allowances) and validate the blanks before machining.
- Design or specify machining fixtures built for rigidity and repeatability.
- Program 4 and 5-axis machining in CAM, positional and simultaneous: roughing and finishing strategies, choice of tools and cutting conditions, post-processing for each machine.
- Verify every program in simulation, with the fixture and tool models, to remove collisions and over-travel before the program reaches the shop floor.
- Write the manufacturing file: routing, blank sheet, setup sheet, tool list and inspection instructions.
- Follow the first part on the machine with the setters, correct the program and contribute to the FAI file to AS/EN 9102.
- Improve processes in series production: cycle times, tool life, and handling of non-conformities with the 8D method.
What we look for
- Engineering degree, applied licence or equivalent in mechanical engineering, mechanical manufacturing or production engineering.
- At least two years of experience in methods and CAM programming of machined parts on 4 and 5-axis machines.
- Command of CATIA or Siemens NX; experience of Mastercam is an advantage.
- Regular use of machining simulation, and a good understanding of post-processors and ISO code.
- Thorough knowledge of aerospace industrialisation: drawings and geometric tolerancing, materials and blanks, traceability, EN 9100, FAI and configuration control.
- Good knowledge of cutting tools and of high-speed machining of aluminium.
- Rigour and a shop-floor mindset: you are at the machine for your first parts. Technical English to read customer specifications.
What ESM offers
- A park of 15 machining centres bought new, including eight 5-axis centres and three 4-axis horizontal centres with pallet changers.
- A methods office next to production, equipped with CATIA, Siemens NX and Mastercam, with post-processors maintained for each machine.
- Aerostructure and aircraft equipment parts to industrialise end to end, from the technical review to the FAI.
